In 1964 GfK Audits & Surveys conducted the first national sample census of restaurants and other food-away-from-home establishments to provide manufacturers with marketing insights targeted to better understanding this multibillion-dollar industry. Since that time, we have provided many marketers with information on a broad range of product categories including:

For this program, trained GfK Audits & Surveys researchers personally visit a national probability sample of over 6,000 locations that offer prepared foods for on-premise or take-out consumption. Establishments are classified according to SIC codes and common industry definitions; each establishment is also identified by whether or not it is operated in conjunction with another type of business (i.e., hotel/motel, retail store, etc.).

In each qualifying outlet, an interview is conducted with the owner, chef or manager to determine the use of specific categories of food and supplies as well as the presence of specific categories of cooking equipment. Estimates of quantities used and numbers of meals served may also be recorded.
